You walk into a restaurant and head towards the ba You walk into a restaurant and head towards the bar. Behind it, a lighted mosaic of colorful liquors spread from the ceiling to the floor. It's fancy on another level. Some people may describe it as resplendent; it feels like you're looking into a Queen's jewelry box.
A long counter separates you from the skilled bartender behind it, who shakes, stirs and strains with ease. As you approach, you consider how you'll place your order in English and suddenly you feel out of your element. In other words, you don't feel comfortable. You feel out of your element.
How do you order a drink at a cocktail bar like a native? Well, in today's lesson, you'll learn just that.
Sample
- I’d like a skinny margarita with a hint of agave syrup, please.
- Can I get a whiskey neat, please?
- I’d like a sidecar on the rocks, please.
Tune in for ALL 10. What’s your drink order?

To rip off is a common phrasal verb in English and To rip off is a common phrasal verb in English and it means to overcharge. When someone asks you too much money for something, you might feel like they’re trying to rip you off, as if they’re trying to get more money from you.
Example 1: The guy sold me a broken vacuum cleaner! He ripped me off.
Example 2: The woman said she’d make a birthday cake for my daughter’s birthday but that it would cost $750. She’s not even going to use high-quality ingredients! Can you believe it? What a rip-off! She’s trying to rip me off.
In example 1, you see to rip off as a verb, in example 2, it’s used as a noun.
Be careful! When you say something is a rip-off, it’s as if you’re saying whatever it is isn’t worth it.
Try to use it in an example sentence below.

I’ll go first.
I grew up in an area of California that’s covered in California Redwood trees, the tallest trees in the world, and Sequoias, the most massive trees in the world (you can drive a car through some of them!).
Walking through them is surreal, it’s jaw-dropping; I’ve never felt so small. No photos do it justice.
With that said, I’d say the most amazing place I’ve seen in California is the Avenue of the Giants, it’s an area that’s packed with the tallest of the tallest trees 🌲 (scroll right). It’s also the area where Bigfoot was discovered 😉, which is sort of fun! Listen to episode 19 and 21 to learn more.
If you can’t make it as north as the Avenue of the Giants, I recommend going to Redwood National and State Park and Sequoia National Park to check out these trees! You won’t be disappointed.
Yosemite is most definitely worth visiting as well.⛰️
